Welcome back to Burnt Barn Business!
It’s been a busy and exciting couple of weeks for your humble newsletterer.
The announcement finally arrived for my and Shaky Kane’s new Oni Press miniseries, THE MAN FROM MAYBE. Maybe is a post-apocalyptic western book but rather than being all down and dreary about the world sliding towards oblivion it’s a whole lot of wild, colourful, fun; full of tense action, over the top evil villains and some of the most conniving outlaws you’ll ever meet.
I think of it as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly + Mad Max x Raiders of the Lost Arc = a damn good comic book series.
It all began with Shaky’s design for a gas mask wearing cowboy and his idea of some astronauts investigating a crash site in the desert who turn out to be dinosaurs when they take off their space helmets. From there i just let the wildness take me and the story flew out of me like a bullet from one of Maybe’s revolvers.
We hope you’ll get you orders in with your local comic shops and help make this book a big success!
Here’s Shaky’s cover for issue 1.
And here is David Rubin’s banging variant!
As well as this exciting announcement I’m also going to be at a few upcoming comic conventions starting with…
NICE - BEDFORD - 2-3 SEPTEMBER
This will be my first time with a table at NICE in Bedford and I’m really looking forward to it. They have some very cool guests lined up and I’ve heard a lot of good things about the event.
After NICE I will be hanging out at…
JORNADAS DEL COMIC DE AVILES - 12-16 SEPTEMBER
This is frankly my favourite week of the year. It’s just comic professionals hanging out, chatting with each other and fans. I get to watch awesome artists do sketches all day and generally just meet lovely people.
If you can get there I highly recommend it.
They’ve only just started announcing guests but they have some cool ones.
JORNADAS DEL COMIC DE VALENCIA - 22-24 SEPTEMBER
Keeping the Spanish vibe, I’ll be wandering around this lovely little celebration of comics in Valencia. I won’t be there all the time, but if you happen to spot me then feel free to come say, ‘Hi’!
COMIC EXPO BRISTOL - 7 OCTOBER
Moving into October I will be at the one day Comic Expo Convention in Bristol likely sat beside Shaky Kane with a whole load of Weird Work comics to sign, as well as potentially an exciting convention exclusive.
It’s rare that Shaky leaves the house, so if you’re in the area take the opportunity to come get some stuff signed by us!
I also have some more cons lined up, both as an exhibitor and just as a punter but I’ll save those for another newsletter!
Finally, Weird Work #2 is on shelves tomorrow and it would be really great if you went and picked up a copy of one of our four marvellous covers by Shaky, Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, Brendan McCarthy and Alexis Ziritt.
And whilst you’re in your LCS don’t forget to let them know which Weird Work #3 covers you want and to remind them to add The Man From Maybe to your pull list!
As well as Shaky, with have Juan Jose Ryp, Mark Stafford and Krent Able onboard for this covers on this third issue. What a bunch of talented people!
That’s it for me.
I’ll be back soon with more Burnt Barn Business.
Stay safe out there!
I loved issue 2 of Weird Work! Feeling some serious Burroughs-level vibes in this book. Well done.
